My guess from the following news is that TiVo has (at least) a beta of the software they will use with Comcast and that it is compelling.

Cox to roll out TiVo DVR software next year

NEW YORK, Aug 24 (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. <TIVO.O> said on Thursday it has signed a deal to supply digital video recording software to Cox Communications, the fourth-largest cable operator in the United States.

Under the agreement, TiVo will customize software for Cox starting in the first half of 2007, allowing the cable company's subscribers to download TiVo software to their existing DVR set-top boxes provided by Cox.

TiVo, which has partnerships with the largest U.S. cable operator Comcast Corp <CMCSA.O> and satellite broadcaster DirecTV Group Inc. <DTV.N>, has been trying to move beyond offering stand-alone boxes direct to consumers.

"It sounds a similar relationship to the one that it has with Comcast," said Michael Kelman, an analyst at Susquehanna Financial.

"This is definitely the way they'd like to transition the business. I almost see their stand-alone business as a bridge strategy until they can deploy this strategy further," he said.

Shares in TiVo rose 6 percent to $7.63 on the Nasdaq on Thursday morning.

Under the agreement, Cox will also distribute TiVo's interactive advertising platform.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either company.
