I do see a lot of VW's, Porsches, Mercedes, and BMW's out there but few are actually running. Most are in the shop or the junkyards. :)

Seriously though, the winters in Michigan are death for many imports. They salt the roads heavily here and cars don't last terribly long unless they are made of plastic or double galvanized steel. Around here it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a car that will last 15 years at the most. People do it anyways, but not very often.

As for machinery, I believe you are right in that Germany exports a lot of it. Wouldn't see that normally. Don't know about chemicals but remember the horror stories about all of East Germany being a toxic waste dump when the Iron Curtain fell so that's probably correct also.
