If the McCain-Kerry CAFE standards bill had been allowed to pass plus real strong clean energy bills and other reasonable conservation measures, we could kiss off the Arabs and their oil completely in about 10 years. Nonsense. We will not be able to avoid importing oil in 10 years or 20 unless we take the most extreme and economically destructive measures. There would have been some economic loss from the bills that you mention and there could have been some reduction in oil imports, but not nearly enough to stop the US from being an oil importer.
