Germany has claimed the title of world's biggest exporter for the first time in 11 years, pulling ahead of the United States and raising hopes that wage restraint has boosted the competitiveness of German industry.

With $62 billion in exports, Germany's world share is now higher than 10% for the first time in several years. This also is higher than the US share. The third largest exporter in the world is Japan.

The German economy has benefited from growth in Eastern and Central Europe, which has boosted demand for German goods - especially food and machinery. Germany now exports more to Eastern Europe than it does to the US.

"Germany has a first-class, highly-diversified product", Olaf Wortmann from the German machinery association told the FT Deutschland.

"The US competition produces lesser quality and the Japanese are delivering mass produced goods. Therefore Germany is leading in high-quality, tailor-made products".

Last year, Germany was the market leader in machinery exports with 19% global market share ahead of the US with 14,9% followed by Japan with 12,2%.
