On Thursday, Ms. Saleem’s mother, Bushra Bakum, dismissed notions that religion had played a role in the killing. She told reporters that Ms. Saleem had been a constant worry to her parents.

She was a constant worry with the low slung jeans and cigarette smoking. How could we not slit her throat after so much aggravation? She even had an Italian boyfriend! I ask you, how could we not kill our daughter? Religion had absolutely nothing to do with it.
