Why not just "get it right" in the first place and not have to tear down an entire totalitarian and corrupt political/power infrastructure (with all of its vested interests) so that a democratic and capitalist one can be built to replace it??

And if they want an Islamic Republic, why can't that ideological belief be confident enough to stand enduring free political opposition and a free press, and submit itself on a regular basis to re-confirmation in an free and fair electoral process??

I agree with you the decision to be an Islamic state governed by Sharia law should be subject to an electoral reaffirmation regularly. And I agree the ME should be democratic. It's just a matter of HOW to get to both of those objectives that we're discussing. The original topic was how directly the US should be involved in ME affairs, with my view being that less is better for the US than more.

Many other countries/regions of the world are heading in the direction of representative government (Russia, China, India, South Korea as I mentioned, most of South America) on their own. The idea that they should "get it right" the first time does even discuss whether the US should be involved in helping a ME country "get it right"
