I have been reading certain pundits, with increasing frequency it seems, who argue rather persuasively that the real struggle is not Right vs Left, but rather the Forces of Authoritarianism vs Those Who Defend Our Rights & Freedoms.
All these wars, Drugs, Alcohol, Terror, etc, serve the purposes of the authoritarians, both by restricting our freedoms and in conditioning us to accept ever-increasingly onerous restrictions.
Those who argue that the wars do not bother them, since they themselves are doing nothing wrong, play into the hands of those who seek more and more control over the populace, by making the new restrictions seem normal and desirable.
I think this is where the epithets of 'Nazi' and 'fascist' enter the argument, not so much aimed at the GOP itself, but against those who would use its platforms to tighten the screws on the citizens. |
