There are a lot of short term workers from Eastern Europe during the summer. They are not all immigrants. Also lot of Russians, mainly Jewish, immigrated to Boston when the Soviet Union collapsed.

I've had two Romanian PhD students so far. One is now an assistant prof at a local college.

Someone like Nouriel Roubini is an immigrant from Europe. Plenty of us :) (I was born in London). If you add Israelis (e.g. Ed Yardeni) you get to a lot of European economists here.

At the bottom end of the economic spectrum it is almost impossible to immigrate to the US legally. Except via the "lottery". That Romanian Professor got a green card that way. And low level wages are higher in most European countries plus you can fall back on welfare so no point to come to the US unless you have some entrepreneurial plan.
