Progressive Party is not the same as a person or group calling themselves 'Progressive'. The first Progressive Party was also called the Bull Moose Party and was a splinter group from the Republicans.

In 1948, a Progressive Party was formed by dissident Democrats. They were supported by the US Communist Party, and were attacked as being communist dominated. They received 1 million popular votes in the election.

The Democratic Socialists of America uses this terminology, and it has now been picked up by mainstream Democrats. The DSA professed that they prefer to be called 'Progressive' as opposed to 'Socialist'.
