FP says Barrick ex's Western Goldfields starts trading

2006-08-28 08:57 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Monday edition shares of Western Goldfields start trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange Aug. 28. The Post's Peter Koven writes it is a company previously based in Nevada that Randall Oliphant, the former chief executive officer of Barrick Gold Corp., took control of this year and overhauled. "It's kind of fun to close a U.S. head office, move it to Toronto, and bring it to the Toronto Stock Exchange," said Mr. Oliphant. "We're by no means an Inco, but it's something our management team and board are proud to do." It also marks a return to Canada for Mr. Oliphant, Western Goldfields' chairman. He was fired from Barrick in 2003 over a slumping stock price and hedging problems. He got back into the mining business in late 2004, when he formed "a bit of a mining group" with a few other industry veterans, including Ray Threlkeld, Barrick's former vice-president of project development. They got involved with a Russian-based silver exploration company called Silver Bear Resources Inc. They were operating in Russia when Mr. Oliphant heard about Western Goldfields, which had bought a California property called the Mesquite Mine in 2003 from Newmont Mining Corp.
