I agree with you on this.

Arguably the Bush administration has gone beyond the limits in certain situations, but as you state they have at least a plausible explanation when they do about how/why they really haven't exceeded the limits.

My problem isn't as much the idea that they have exceeded the limits, because the limits aren't always crystal clear. I certainly don't think they have endangered the republic. But what makes me itch just a little is that they always seem to want to push the limits as far as they can go. Not "Bush has clearly acted illegally and should be impeached", certainly not "Bush is a fascist", or "Bush has endangered the republic", or "Bush is a dictator", but just the normal activities of politicians pushing as close to the line as far as they can, while at the same time trying to move the line a bit. Bush has more justification than many politicians, OTOH he probably exaggerates that justification, and its hard to know for sure as they details of the actions are not made public. There is some good reasons to keep some details secret, but than as I've said on another thread "secrecy in government may be necessary sometimes but it is never an unalloyed good".
