Fair point. France did have an air of freedom about it, such as one doesn't experience in NZ these days, and certainly not in the USA, and absolutely not in Singapore. One can't step far out of line in Singapore. Even repressive China seemed quite out of control to me compared with the Big Brother breadth and depth of control and therefore lack of freedom as in the USA, and increasingly NZ, in many ways that matter in day to day life if not all.
