The temperature in the oceans at a given latitude don't vary a lot. If they are trending warmer or cooler, you can rest assured that the overall climate is doing the same.

Yes, that would be for historical time. But Elroy was asking about time of Christ to 1000 AD. The other stuff can give an idea of longer time periods.
