Solar and wind power are very expensive if implemented on a large enough scale to make a dent in our electrical generating needs. They also take up a lot of land area. For specialized applications, or perhaps even more general applications in specific locations solar and wind power make some sense, but the initial investment is large at least if you hope to produce a lot of energy, and if you don't produce a lot of energy you might be making a statement but you aren't making a real difference.

Also you have the fact that solar and wind power only produce electricity, or local heat, or local mechanical/kinetic energy. They don't produce fuel. You could use them to power electric cars but then you have to invest in all the electric cars as well, which will not only cost a lot of money, but will also eventually result in a lot of toxic batteries that have to be disposed of.
