Intel intros Ethernet/56K combo modem card
By Carmen Nobel, PC Week Online

Intel Corp. this week unveiled a combination 10/100
Ethernet LAN adapter and 56K-bps modem on a
single 16-bit PC Card.

Intel's PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 PC Card supports
Rockwell Software Inc.'s K56Flex technology and
includes an installation program that automatically
configures the modem, the network operating system
and the notebook, said Intel officials in Santa Clara,
Calif.

Intel's new product is a rebranded version of Xircom's
CreditCard Ethernet 10/100+ Modem56 card, which
was released in June, according to Intel officials. Intel
currently owns 12 percent of Xircom.

"This is Xircom's product with a new name," said an
Intel official.

The Intel product, available now, will be slightly more
expensive than the Xircom product. While Xircom's
CreditCard costs $379 for a single pack, Intel's
PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 PC Card is priced at $389.
Xircom charges $334 per card in a six-pack, while Intel
charges $379 per card in a five-pack. In a 20-pack,
Intel's is priced at $369 each, while Xircom's is
$333.50 each.
