Hawk...YOU'RE saying that "such freedoms" are critical to developing a successful democracy" and I'M saying that such freedoms are not pragmatically possible in many of the societies for which you prescribe it.

YOU'RE the one creating "hypothetical scenarios" in which a standardized version of democracy fits all cultures and peoples. (You're a lot like the idiot bush in that regard).

Democracy doesn't automatically make people more receptive to new ideas.

The reason I brought up the Alabama scenario was to accentuate the differences in culture and political tendencies (even in our own country). I used Alabama as an example because I wanted you to recognize that even in the U.S. YOUR vision of democracy probably wouldn't be accepted in some situations.
