patiently nurture liberalizing tendencies within the Islamic world Sounds nice, but while we try "nurturing", Iran will get the bomb and will be ready for mischief. And what makes the author think that the Western style "advantages of freedom" are necessarily such a great attraction to serious Muslims? Sayyid Qutb, for one, wasn't impressed one bit. The questions he raises are real and important... but setting aside the one definite advantage - a strong military - will not be part of the answer.
