Other than the single temporary run to $20 last year, the market has forced this stock to earn every penny of its gains. New investors hoping for a quick buck should realize that VANS has a maddening earthward tendency in spite of the continued good news. The reason? I believe that investors, recalling the company's previous brush with fame in the 1980's, don't trust its ability to move from the level of current trendy into a longer-term, steady-growth player which transcends the latest thing (and which, like Nike, actually defines the market for its own benefit).

I agree; the jury is out. When Vans Inc. clearly indicates that it's ready for the big time and won't be imploding again with the next shift in fashion, then I believe a whole new dynamic will take hold. The question is: how many earnings reports will this take?
