The characteristics he describes are quite interesting, aren't they? Obsession, instability and indifference to reality. The second, in particular. The third is an obvious point, but instability has to do with the transferability of nationalists' loyalties - e.g. all the disaffected communists who became the early supporters of fascism.

The other angle he discusses that most people seem to overlook in discussions of nationalism these days is what he calls "negative nationalism." The Anglophobia of his day sounds awful familiar, doesn't it?

I also liked this comment: "the extreme, barely sane type of nationalist who has no neutral areas in his mind and no interest in anything except the struggle for power. Actually such people are fairly common, but they are not worth the powder and shot." Something to keep in mind when considering whether to give the barely sane types the time of day, huh?

Oh, read "Politics and the English Language", too. Also very good.
