Intellectual cowardice at work

August 30, 2006

The angry e-mail reaction to my post about Donald Rumsfeld's contemptible equation of any criticism of the war in Iraq with appeasement of Nazis is depressing and amazing.

It is possible to simultaneously believe Bush is absolutely right about the threat posed by Islamic terrorism and be dismayed by the execution of that strategy in Iraq. Many CONSERVATIVES believe this, among them George Will and William F. Buckley.

But e-mailers ignore the credibility of Bush's CONSERVATIVE critics in favor of blanket blasts such as ...

why don't you go live in Iran? Join up with the terrorists that will eventually try to murder you, your wife and children. Then we'll see how nice they are. To bad there is not some immediate consequence for liberals like you who try to lead our county into chaos. I guess that's free America in lieu of YOUR Iran! You are disgraceful!

Why can't these people wrap their brains around the idea that it is possible to believe at the same time that Bush is right about Islamic terrorism/his administration hasn't done a good job in Iraq? Why? Because of intellectual cowardice -- they say all critics are commies but can't bring themselves to face up to the fact critics include such giants of the right as Will and Buckley.

Unless, of course, they now see Will and Buckley as pinkos.

But of course they are -- because, you see, you're either for Bush or for terrorism. Such a powerful, thoughtful, nuanced insight! Such strategic brilliance! Such intellectual firepower at work in that assessment of our 21st-century foreign policy!

The comparison with Israel is striking. The criticism of Olmert's execution of the war on terrorism is constant. But no one asserts it is akin to a lack of patriotism.
