Tim,

A guy was just forced to get off a plane and change his t shirt because it said: "we will not be silent". What the hell do you think is happening in this country? Why do you think incidents like that are becoming more common? Are you simply arguing for the sake of arguing, or are you trying to defend something that is indefensible?

the promotion of nationalism

Not a lot of that going on, depending on how exactly you define the boundary between nationalism and patriotism. Certainly not the type of nationalistic displays you would expect from a fascist state.

Huh? The Senate just tried to pass a bill banning the burning of the American flag. Burning the flag is an American tradition showing our tolerance for free speech even when we find it disgusting. This attempt is symptomatic of the push for nationalism. Bush, Cheney, Rummie et al have all but called people who oppose their view as fascists. There is every attempt made to get people to rally around 'the flag' no matter what and free speech be damned!

the circumvention of laws

Every type of government does that.

Really? If true, then its unacceptable. Its esp true in a democracy when there is a violation of individual freedoms.

And many of the accusations against this administration amount more to a battle between the executive and the legislature as to defined limits of power rather than any clear violation of or circumvention of laws.

That too is not a minor battle. Checks and balances is an integral part of this gov't......it's as important, if not important than the Declaration of Independence. The Bush administrations's et al repeated attempts to invalidate those checks is a serious breach of this republic.

the identification of an unacceptable minority

Not applicable to America of today.

Huh? Think Muslims and gays.
