I would agree that SI is one of those self-selecting fora where the more opinionated people tend to post the most. But your second point, that everyone wants to defend our country, falls in to the awkward void.

Awkward because we face all kinds of emotional distortions about the enemy, the threat we face and what we can or should do about it. Questioning established policies draws screams of how those questions undermine our resolve or ignore the clear and present danger.

Among all the people who want to do the right thing, there is a large gulf between those who buy one set of dramatic assumptions and others who question those assumptions and want a more detailed model, especially since the last time we were sold a pat story about the bad guys, reality turned out quite different.
