The Sigma SD14 DSLR is on its way to market very soon, according to a new Sigma web page teaser ad designed to tweak the reader's curiosity with small amount of information on this new camera. According to the ad, the Sigma SD14 will officially be launched on the opening day of Photokina, September 26, 2006. Details are very sketchy but its leads one to believe that the new SD14 will utilize a new, higher resolution Foveon X3 image sensor.

Foveon sensors are said to be able to capture 3 colors (R,G,B) at each pixel, giving it three times the (color) resolving capabilities. The last Sigma DSLR was called the SD10 and utilized a Foveon sensor that offered 3.3-megapixels per pixel for a grand total of 10.0-megapixels. From various reports on the web we might assume that the new SD14 could be using a 4.7-megapixel Foveon image sensor and, according to our math, that would give the new DSLR an equivalent 14-megapixel resolution.
