koan is quite wise, imo, to seek in a layer deeper than mere intellect -- in the realm of "soul", as it were, (wherein curiosity dwells) -- the explanation for why one person is a liberal and another a conservative. no doubt we've all experienced the frustration of trying to get one of the opposite political persuasion to see things our way through "reason" -- success is very rare, as the basis for these sharply contrasting political views are so deeply-rooted. to this extent, at least, count me as a "koan-head". ;> nor do i disagree with your observation that inflexible, orthodox, conventional thinking is a great obstacle to us all. (the account of the ape clans is both fascinating and depressing). if one defines this type of petrified, status quo "thinking" as "conservative" - then the freer mode of thought practiced by "liberals" is clearly to be preferred. but to maintain that *present-day* political liberals are more curious and hence wiser than political conservatives, well, this is what i was reacting against - unduly harshly i admit - in a moment of pique. not that koan necessarily believes this - he just sort of floated the idea as a theory, thinking out loud, which is fine... jb
