Normally if someone develops a patented method of application
or technique, someone else is able to develop a different technique
to do the same thing. There can be many alternatives that do the
same thing so a patent only stimulates other options to a problem.
I doubt that IBM would want to license the technology to a vendor
since that would allow the vendor to sell the technology to competitors which defeats the "technology edge" IBM feels gives
it competitive advantage. There may be some other materials
that are better than copper that materialize, maybe an alloy of some
type that is more in line with the techniques currently in use with
current fab technology possibly a gold/silver amalgam or platinum
etc. time will tell.
