Boy the Newbridge affiliates keep on outdoing the competition as well. I wish I could find out how NN will handle these when they go public. Here is the lastest press release on Timestep:

TimeStep Is Top VPN Vendor In Infoworld Review
TimeStep PERMIT SVPN solution is top VPN vendor for InfoWorld's comprehensive VPN comparison
KANATA, Ontario, Sept. 25 /CNW-PRN/ - TimeStep Corp, a Newbridge(x) affiliate, announced today that they received top marks from a major US networking publication in recent comparison of virtual private networking (VPN) solutions. InfoWorld gave TimeStep's PERMIT product the highest performance rating in a rigorous VPN real-world test scenario. For this review, InfoWorld defines VPNs as any way to use the Internet to securely transport private data.
For the recent InfoWorld VPN review, the test lab compared four methods of creating VPNs over the Internet. Looking at solutions from vendors of firewalls, software, and hardware, as well as a solution from an Internet Service Provider, the InfoWorld test lab set out to determine which method was the most effective in a real-world scenario. After initial interviews with the magazine, TimeStep's PERMIT solution was selected to represent the hardware VPN vendor method. PERMIT's Secure VPN solution came out on top, posting the highest score overall.
``All of the VPNs we tested will yield substantial savings over leased lines, without compromising safety or performance. The TimeStep hardware-based solution offered the best combination of price, security, and speed,'' InfoWorld magazine, Sept 22, 1997. ``With the market, in our view, on the verge of exploding, it's no wonder VPNs are different things to different vendors. Everyone wants a piece of the action. We looked at four very different ways to build a VPN, and TimeStep's Permit gateways and software finished on top due to an easy implementation and fast, hardware-based encryption.''
It is well known that leased lines are exorbitantly priced and, in the age of the Internet, increasingly antiquated. When InfoWorld priced a hypothetical 20-city WAN using four solutions and a leased-line scenario, the value of VPNs astounded them. Money is not the only reason to switch. VPNs make it easier to add new offices to the WAN because companies can simply connect that new office to the Internet. Perhaps more importantly, InfoWorld found the traditional concerns about VPNs -- that they are slow and unsafe -- to be unfounded. In the InfoWorld tests, they didn't experience any outages or unpredictable results.
``It's rare that each solution in a Comparison is better than what it's built to replace, especially when a new technology is involved. But all four of the virtual private networks (VPNs) we built are so much less expensive than traditional leased lines, without compromising security or performance, that we feel quite comfortable saying VPNs are ready for the enterprise,'' InfoWorld Magazine, Sept 22, 1997.
``Secure VPNs will change the networking paradigm,'' said Tim Hember, TimeStep President and CEO. ``We're honoured that our product received the highest marks in the VPN comparison and we're encouraged by InfoWorld's position that VPNs are ready for today's networking. For over a year now we've believed this to be true. Now InfoWorld is helping us tell the world.''
