Following was written by a woman who formerly belonged to one of the Fundmentalist polygamist groups:
>>Polygamy, as it is traditionally lived by religious, fundamentalist groups, is an intrinsic insult to women. It speaks to women as being unworthy, incapable, underprivileged and, in every way possible, unequal to men. It says that men are capable of loving more than one partner and women are not. Men can govern more than one woman at a time; women cannot govern themselves. Men can solicit for other lovers; women cannot. The polygamist's "god" says that only men can live the law of polygamy; women cannot.
In other words, God has given men, and only men, permission to commit adultery, but women are under a different law. If this was the case, then I suppose God should have written two different Bibles or covenants, one for men and one for women.
Polygamy is always and ever will be an abuse to women and men. Women are subject to emotional abuse, economic abuse, societal abuse and often physical abuse because of a system that is totally out of balance. And men are also subject to these imbalances. Why else are more than 400 males being excommunicated or driven from a so-called "religious, fundamentalist group" on the Utah-Arizona border?
Anyone with a brain can figure that one out. There are too many men and not enough women to sustain their so-called "higher law" of polygamy.
Don't get me wrong. I believe that people should have the right to live any lifestyle they choose -- as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. So if you want to live polygamy, at least make it fair. There isn't anywhere in the Bible that says women cannot have more than one husband. (Believe me, I've looked.)
Which makes me wonder why men who have sex with more than one woman at a time are considered "studs," while women who have sex with more than one man are considered "sluts." There really isn't any difference, so that's a blatent double standard.<< |
