Are you saying that you agree with official multiculturalism? I don't believe in discrimination, but expecting people to speak either English or French seems pretty clear-cut and even-handed. Where would you draw the line, anyway, if that were not the case? Is immigration a service to foreigners or to pay off immigrant political lobbies, or is it responsible to Canadians to be done in the interests of all Canadians first and foremost? I do think that immigration can be hugely beneficial, but it means accepting people who want to be a part of our country and interact with the rest of us freely and openly, not be here for things like free healthcare or to be accomodated in a foreign language.

Stephen's right -- not only have those who suffered the head tax had eons to learn English, but when they came to Canada they were well aware that English was the official language.
