By that definition I occupy America. The aspect that seems to be missing here is the concept of "success" versus "failure". We entered Iraq. We are in Iraq. But neither implies that we are successful in Iraq. The way we entered Iraq set the stage for the way we have stayed in Iraq. What we failed to do when we entered was to secure the vast arms depots that instantly became a national network of weapons Walmarts for every person in the country with an agenda to see us fail. The looting that went on as we entered signalled our weakness to enforce even the most basic of laws and set the stage for anarchy at the national level and militia control at the local level.

You can if you strongly prefer tilt words slightly this way or that. But the point I am making is that the failures at the time of entry led directly to the failures during the rest of the time we will be in Iraq. I do not see how anybody can say with a straight face that when we enetered we did all the right things, but then later we screwed it up. That is patently false IMO. Rather, when we entered we focused on some things and did them well, and failed completely in other areas that have proven catastropphic later on -- such as failing to secure the vast network of weapons depots all over the country and failing to secure the streets at the moment of entry to instill a sense of our ability to impose order of any kind later on.
