You are right. There are the Enrons and Nortels.

But holding long does not mean you should not review your choices once in a while. You are allowed to make changes in a longterm investement portfolio. BTW, long term investing doesn't mean for life. It means you keep 6 months, a year or more compared to a few hours, a day or a week.

And if your portoflio is balanced with positions in the 2-15% range. Then a total loss on one single stock, assuming you are very unlucky, can be digested without too much pain.
