This si an interesting article for me, as back in my days in academe I worked on a research project where we investigated the nature of the Canadian corporate elite. One of the methods we used was to (literally) draw connections between corporations by shared executives and board members.

We were able to show how the companies formed alliances which shifted and transmogrified over 50 years -- chiefly shoving the old Montreal-based Bank of Montreal/Royal Bank/CP core of the network to the side in favour of the Reichnmans, Bronfmans, and their ilk.

We made a major contribution to a debate as to whether corporate interlocks are an expression of having to draw from a limited pool of suitable people, or whether they are made more on the basis of utility, e.g. two companies are working together ona project so they share a director. Our data supported the latter hypothesis more strongly.

It would be quite fascinating to apply network analysis to the junior mining sector. If I ever decide to go back and finish the Ph.D., maybe I'll switch my dissertation topic to this new interest of mine.
