Airbus Chief Replaces Head of Troubled A380 Program - (Update2) By Andrea Rothman
Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Christian Streiff, two months after becoming chief executive officer of Airbus SAS, replaced Charles Champion as head of the delayed A380 superjumbo program and stripped him of the title of chief operating officer.
Mario Heinen, 50, will take over the A380 series after previously overseeing the A320, the world's largest maker of commercial aircraft said in a statement today. Champion, 51, will stay at the company as a special adviser to Streiff.
Streiff, 51, took over in July after Airbus parent Airbus parent European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co. said the A380s were a year behind schedule and the delays would cut operating profit by 2 billion euros ($2.57 billion) by 2010. The removal of Champion is Streiff's first action since saying in July he needed 100 days to review the situation at the company.
``This shows decisiveness on Streiff's part,'' said Zafar Kahn, an analyst at SG Securities in London who has a ``sell'' on EADS shares. ``He's beginning to show his hand a little, showing that he's beginning to take control. This is his first action.''
