Nixon had left the economy in pretty sorry shape, never having paid for the Vietnam war, and Carter started trying to pay it down. The Iranians took our hostages, and Carter was helpless. Inflation ate any wage gains, and people felt their lives were hopeless, which Carter dealt with by telling us our days as top dog were over. A truly depressing President. I have to say that I have the highest respect for Carter. Starting out as a peanut farmer and getting where he got is nothing short of amazing. He has great intergrity and considerable compassion. He takes on the tough jobs that most people would avoid. However, he was the wrong person to lead a nation that is as patriarchal and militeristic as this one is. That has made him fodder for the GOP and its ridiculous spin.
