"In his directive for an updated National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Israel, the US president wanted to find out if the mismanaged Lebanon War was a curable hiccup or the symptom of a deeper malady.

He asked whether Israel is robust enough to continue to count as a strong and stable political and military force able to serve the United States as a Middle East ally and a strategic mainstay in the region."

The answer is that Israel, who once served as a reliable client state foil to Soviet Arab client states, is now a LIABILITY to the United States in the Post Cold war era. The Arab states are no longer Soviet clients, hate Israel, have the oil our economy needs and see the US and Israel as ONE - the "Great and little Satan".

This isn't good for our country. Israel should be treated as just another foreign country by us, condemned when need be, receiving an appropriate amount of foreign aid and having in no way any special status with us. It should be no more special than say, Ireland.
