Actually, I seem to recall that Israel was pleading with the UN over and over again to have them pressure Lebanon and Syria to implement UNSC 1559, to no avail.

What does that have to do with negotiating with Hizbullah for the realise of the two soldiers?

Maybe short term... But most of those moderate Arabs are Sunnis and they really don't give much of a sh*t what happens to Shi'as. In fact, they perceive a definite threat from Shi'ism so they might actually be thanking Israel (under their breath) for assisting in diminishing Iran's influence in Lebanon.

Unfortunately we are doing the reverse in Iraq.

But I agree.. there's quite a few perceptions that can be drawn from the recent conflict. We'll see what happens by later on this year.

I was a bit hopeful that various comments of moderation from Hizbullah & Hamas individuals might mean something. Then Olmert followed up with comments hoping for peace with Lebanon. Unfortunately, the Lebanese PM didn't follow the lead. To bad once again.
