I do believe you don't believe in common sense, koan, I admire that. If I were you, I would distrust any sort of self generated common sense sort of notions. They could get you into trouble. It would be better to imitate others, and be safe. Keeps your fingers, toes, wallet etc.. This sort of slavish imitation, flying often as it does in the face of logic, may be a best policy for most people, as it conserves rolling stock, clothing, flammable materials etc.. Go along with the lemmings. They may eventually end up in the sea, but in the meantime, you won't be unpopular.
And yes, I agree with you 100%, that most of your simple answers to most of the questions I have seen you struggle with, are in fact usually wrong. You and Mencken are right about that. Seeing as you can be totally right at times, (it is a sort of breakthrough); it means you should keep trying. This could be an epiphany, or for some, perhaps, a starting point. :) Perhaps your error rate will decline to the point that you will start to prosper in a manner befitting your opinion of your own abilities. And since we have not heard that "secret" self-spoken in so many words, you could be right about that too. So tell me,if you don't mind sharing this, as it was a matter of personal curiosity that comes up naturally in considering these points, (you may pm this for modesty's sake) just how capable a person do you believe you are? If you are too shy for that, (I can understand that of course, bragging is demeaning..) how good are you at your best ability? Or barring that as seeming to be mere bragging as well, what is your best ability, and has this provided yourself with any sort of gain wealth or at least a great deal of satisfaction?
I know you could turn the tables on me so I will lead off. I am pretty good at canoeing, skiing, backwoods camping, recreational math, figuring out who in the stock market who run public companies are being deceptive, figuring out engineering methods to discover ore, and recover precious metals, mechanical engineering design, and boring people with details of such. It could be profitable and has been for some people, but it is much harder to make a considerable profit from your own ability so much as it is to sell it too often for too low a price. That marketing ability is the province of power, luck, and it would appear, the tendency to megalomania.
