She should write a special section on emotional responses by cynics. I could help her a lot.

Dismissing fusion powered automobiles as just around the corner technology, the problem isn't "technology". I'm sure with the proper motivation we could have hydrogen powered vehicles all over the place in just a few years. The problem is infrastructure. Who is going to invest in the infrastructure to support all those vehicles? Without the infrastructure no one is going to buy the fuel cell powered cars and without the cars, no one is going to invest in an infrastructure.

I've thought of two general approaches. One, the government builds the infrastructure. Same rationale as building the roads, we need it. Though somehow I don't think that will fly. The other approach is to require by law the oil distribution system to develop a parallel infrastructure for hydrogen. Oil companies won't want to put themselves out of business by developing the infrastructure.

The "easiest" solution is for the free market and innovation to handle it. Now we don't have to worry about it anymore or make any difficult decisions. Can we get back to the flag burning amendment now?
