The perpetraitors were scared shitless knowing the extreme gravity of what they had done.
Many of the comments in the first days after the attacks show that. They were lying about everything. They were threatening the public. They were warning each other to, "watch what you do, watch what you say"...but they did and said enough to implicate themselves anyway...before, during and after the crime.
