J - Re: Intel Losing Focus
Intel makes huge profits on CPU's that go into servers - they have virtually NO competition in the x86 Server end of the business.
Servers are required for networks.
The more networks, the more servers.
The more servers, the more x86 Pentium Pro/Pentium II/Deschutes sales.
The more Intel can expand network proliferation - via acquisition or internal growth - the faster networks proliferate.
Case, Dayna, MRVC, Standard Microsystems... all these play in the network hardware business.
Pandesic (SAP + Intel) is an attempt to expand Internet commerce. The Internet = Servers + Routers/Hubs/Switches + Client CPU machines.
As for graphics, Intel has the notebook CPU business to themselves.
The more notebooks sold, the more money goes into Intel coffers.
Their acquisition of Chips & Tech, which specializes in notebook graphics chips, will ultimatley help promote more standardized, lower cost, Intel-based notebooks.
Ditto for Xircom, SMC.
