Michael, sounds like we mostly agree. If I were offered 50c on the dollar for my supposed SS "account," I'd grab it like a duck on a junebug. Even with restrictions on what investments the money could be put into, and governmental restrictions on how and when it could be withdrawn, I'd feel a whole lot better having the money in an account that I could manage myself.

Where we don't seem to agree is that the "little guy always loses," and that "Joe Sixpack is too stupid to manage his money." If the "little guy" and your buddy Joe can file tax forms every year and stay out of jail while making a living for himself and his family, he can manage his own retirement account. Some might do better than Joe with their money, but Joe's willingness to learn how to invest will determine how comfortable Joe's retirement will be, not people on a board of directors or greedy congress critters.

Your "smoking dope" comment was out of line, IMO.
