Sorry to switch gears here, but hopefully one of our astute followers of both Canadian politics and investments can answer a question I have. Last November the former Liberal government announced that it was not going to change tax rules for income trusts, but instead make dividend treatment more favourable to compensate for the unfavourable tax treatment of corporations as compared to income trusts. Dividends received by shareholders would be grossed up 45% and the tax credit would rise to 19%. Does anyone know if this legislation with respect to dividends is in effect for the 2006 tax year, or did it die with the former government?
