Hydrogen is mercifully dead, at least for now. Not an energy source; an energy carrier.

I'm not totally counting Hydrogen out. But your right about the current economies are not quite there yet.

However, were we to obtain some cost-effective solar technology that is not resource intensive (metals, exotic materials.. etc) then effectively folks have an initial investment upfront and they could feasibly produce their own hydrogen.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this company, Nanosolar, claims to have made Solar power generation about as cost comparable to electricy generated via fossil fuels. (I'm really waiting for this company to IPO)

Thus, rather than converting one form of energy storage into another, effectively Solar to Hydrogen would amount to actually storing energy, which means you could have your Solar panel layered roofing tiles producing and storing Hydrogen for you all day long and you could refill in the evening.

But on a mass retail scale (refueling stations), I'm not sure it will ever achieve practicality.
