I agree with you. I'm just looking, however, for some sort of institutional change which could account for a decline in "facticity checking."

The present Bush folk, in my view, have taken all this to another level. If the previous mode was, when called out on factless spinning, the relevant pol would issue some sort of apology, but then keep spinning because there was no serious loss, nobody really cared, the Bush folk changed that. They created an art form out of the "there must be something wrong with you if you disagree with our version of the facts". And since there megaphone is the largest toy in the room, and publishers and editors tend to look askance at reporters who don't get invited to WH functions, well Kolbert's "truthiness" becomes the order of the day.
