Does this make you wonder what's REALLY going on with medical prices? Is the hospital willing to accept a contract write-off because they KNOW they will be paid by the insurance company, whereas if Joe Blow walks in without insurance, maybe they get paid, maybe not?

I've had a $30K hospital bill settled for $6K by the insurance company and another one for $50K settled for $8K. How could the possibly do this if their real costs were their billed costs?
