If you use your debit card as an ATM card and enter your pin, than I think it won't let you overdraft on your account, but you pay a fee for every transaction.

If you use your debit card as a credit card than than you avoid a fee, but you have no protection from overdrafts. You will be allowed to exceed the limit and you will be charged for it.
