"The fairness doctrine helped reinforce a politics of moderation and inclusiveness. The collapse of the fairness doctrine and its corollary rules blurred the distinctions between news, political advocacy, and political advertising, and helped lead to the polarizing cacophony of strident talking heads that we have today." -- State Rep. Mark B. Cohen (PA)

Ever since the GOP-controlled FCC struck down the doctrine in 1987, media partisans have had a free hand to catapult the propaganda without the concern of whether or not it is reality-based, since the media are no longer required to give rebuttal time to the opposition.

While this development could have benefitted both sides equally, it "just so happened" to occur at the very time when the Right had nearly completed the building of its Mighty Wurlizer echo chamber noise machine.

The Dems are still struggling to catch up.

The extreme political polarization and unprecedented expansion of screaming head partisans derives directly from the repeal, IMO.
