Nagin is a special case. First of all, he's a New Orleanian, and that doesn't translate for the rest of Louisiana.

Second, prior to Katrina, he was popular with whites in New Orleans because he's business oriented. I think a lot of whites preferred him to the challengers after Katrina, otherwise he would not have been re-elected.

But during the last governor's race, Bobby Jindal, a Republican, came close to being elected. The biggest "negative" against him is that his family is from India, and he has darkish skin. To a prejudiced white, he looks mulatto, but to a prejudiced black, he's not black.

Personally, if I were still living in LA, I'd vote for him.

And a large (just guessing, a majority) of the dispersed New Orleanians are poor blacks, now living in other parts of the country and not likely to vote.
