One of the problems smart people have is that they just can't comprehend stupid people. They can communicate just fine with other smart people but stupid people flabbergast them. The entire point of the debit cards was to assist people who had nothing but the shirts on their backs and the shoes on their feet, if that. It's a foregone conclusion that some will use the money foolishly, because they are foolish, they've made foolish choices their entire lives. Does that mean that the program was wrong-headed? I say no. I say, the good that was done far outweighs the bad. Human beings are variable. Some admirable, some not so admirable. You can't know, in advance, whether the services you donate will bear fruit. Sometimes many years after you gave it. You're casting your bread on the waters, as the Good Book says. It will return, tenfold.
