Also, I think merchants pay lower charges on debit rather than credit.

I'm not sure they pay any charge if you use it as an ATM card (entering your pin), and in your case you also don't pay a charge (but most people would). Maybe the merchants do pay a fee though I'm not 100% sure.

If you use it as a credit card (no pin entered) than they pay a percentage.
