Don't you think that the administrations, at the department level, at least, are aware of the political positions of the faculty and approve of them?

I don't know. They might not know. Or they might not be able to do anything about it. Or, given scarce resources, they might not put a priority on it. Or they might approve. I have no basis for assessing that. There wasn't any of that going on when I was in college. That was a long time ago, though. My most recent degree was mid seventies.
